We love us some good BBQ Sauce here at Dinnertime Somewhere. There’s something special about having a fresh batch of homemade Spicy BBQ Sauce ready to go isn’t there? You end up completely tailoring your cooking around what will pair well with the sauce. Well, I do that anyway!

This is our favorite style of BBQ Sauce. Spicy BBQ Sauce prepared Kansas Style. Basically, Kansas style is a much thicker, sweeter style of BBQ sauce and is prepared with a Tomato base. I’ve always been a big fan of the tomato-based BBQ sauces and this sauce is a perfect baste for our Spicy Kansas Style Ribs (recipe link here)

This sauce is also an exceptional sauce to add to sandwiches, burgers, or any kind of proteins you may be grilling over an open flame in the summertime. It’s got a lovely spicy kick to it as well. We encourage you to keep that Cayenne Pepper and Chili Powder in this recipe, it’s not overwhelming but adds such a lovely spice element that really enhances the sauce

What makes a great Spicy BBQ Sauce is the amazing combination of Ingredients

What I’ve always loved about BBQ sauce is how varied the ingredients are that go into its creation. By varied, I mean two things. Firstly, there’s typically lots of ingredients that consist in a BBQ Sauce. Some BBQ Sauce recipes can have more than 30 ingredients in them! Our Spicy BBQ Sauce doesn’t have that many but does have quite a few; 15 to be precise!

The ingredients range from vegetables, to condiments, to herbs and spices. The ingredients cover a whole spectrum of food groups and are what gives good quality BBQ sauce it’s unique flavor

When I mention the ingredients are varied, the other reason I mean is how wildly different the flavor profiles are of the ingredients. Not only different, but so many of the ingredients are at the complete extreme end of the spectrum of flavor profiles

The 15 ingredients that make up this Spicy BBQ Sauce makes it truly unique, and unbelievably tasty!

Beautiful, sweet ingredients flavor this wonderful Sauce

For instance, you’ve got huge levels of sweetness that goes into a BBQ Sauce care of Brown Sugar and Molasses. Both ingredients are the definition of sweetness, and we’re not shy in their quantities when it comes to this wonderful Spicy BBQ Sauce

In contrast, you’ve got a big acid kick in the BBQ Sauce, which creates a lovely harmony

On the complete opposite end of the flavor spectrum is acid. Again, hugely acidic flavors are added to the Sauce with Apple Cider Vinegar. Pair that with the natural acid in Tomatoes, which form the base for the sauce, and you’ve got some extreme contrasting flavors

Yet, the sheet volume of ingredients and aggressiveness of their flavor profiles still manages to create a BBQ Sauce that is in perfect harmony. Each ingredient has its place in this recipe, and they all add a uniqueness to the recipe that makes it special

It wouldn’t be a Spicy BBQ Sauce without Spice, of course!

Nothing beats a good quality BBQ Sauce that packs some punch. A little bit of heat goes a long way in BBQ land, and this recipe is absolutely no exception. We’re bringing the heat in the Sauce through not one, not two, but three ingredients!

Chili Powder and Cayenne Pepper are the spice components bringing the heat to this Sauce. We’re generous with both in the recipe – 1 tbsp. of each spice is added to the sauce. You can always scale the quantity back a little bit if you don’t want the sauce overly spicy

The third spice element comes from Yellow Mustard. It typically carries less heat than other types of Mustards, and marries the spice with a lovely, sweet flavor which is great in this sauce. If you’re feeling adventurous you can always try to add some hotter mustard into the sauce to really get things heating up!

Spicy BBQ Sauce Kansas Style Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 Yellow Onion, finely diced
  • 2 Cans of Crushed Tomatoes (28 oz.)
  • 2 tbsp. Butter
  • 2 tbsp. Tomato Paste
  • 2 Cloves Garlic, peeled and chopped
  • ⅓ cup Molasses
  • ⅓ cup Brown Sugar
  • ⅓ cup Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1 tbsp. Yellow Mustard
  • 1 tbsp. Paprika
  • 1 tbsp. Onion Powder
  • 1 tbsp. Cayenne Pepper
  • 1 tsp. Chili Powder
  • 1 tsp. Pepper
  • 1 tsp. Salt

Instructions

  1. Melt the Butter in a large Saucepan then add the Onion, Cook for 3-4 minutes on medium / high then add the Garlic
  2. Cook Garlic for a further 2 minutes then add the Tomato Paste and Crushed Tomatoes, cooking for a further 5 minutes
  3. Add the remaining ingredients then bring the mixture to a boil. Drop the heat to a simmer and cook uncovered for 20 – 25 minutes. Be careful when cooking as the sugar content in the sauce makes the splatters quite hot. So if you have a splatter guard for your saucepan, now would be the time to use it!
  4. Check for seasoning, adjust if necessary then remove from heat and serve

Recipe Notes

The sauce can keep for up to 1 week in the refrigerator. Freeze the sauce and it will keep for a month
