I’m a person who has eaten a lot of desserts over my years. As the legend says, no matter how full you are there is always room for dessert! So, in my dessert eating journeys across the globe there is one dessert that I always come back to, and it is my absolute favorite. The classic Chocolate Mousse! This one is unbelievably simple to create. A simple, No Egg Chocolate Mousse that tastes phenomenal

I’m certain the first time I had Chocolate Mousse and where it all began was, probably like many kids: At the Pizza Hut! Back in the late 80’s / early 90’s Pizza Hut was THE place to go for a Friday night dinner with the family. They had introduced the ‘all you can eat’ menu which I believe at the time cost something like $5 a person! This included all the Pizzas, Salads, and of course, desserts

Enjoy this delicious dessert however you like. Loaded up with Cream or as is for the full Chocolate effect!

Now me being a kid I would bypass the salads (eww), I’d bypass the Pizzas and immediately head to the dessert station! Fill my plate up with a big serving of Chocolate Mousse with accompanying chocolate sprinkles and kick off the meal. Pizza could always come later, I was there for the Mousse!

Good quality Chocolate is the key to a great Chocolate Mousse

It goes without saying that the prominent ingredient in our No Egg Chocolate Mousse is Chocolate. It certainly isn’t Egg that’s for sure! Like all chocolate desserts it is very important to get the best quality Chocolate you can. We understand that quality is in the eye of the beholder, so we recommend trialing a few different types of Chocolates to find the one you like best

As a general rule of thumb, you want to be using Dark Chocolate with a Cocoa percentage around the 70 – 80% mark. Some may think that the 80% mark is a little high, however for this No Egg Chocolate Mousse recipe the high Cocoa percentage works quite well. The bitterness of the Chocolate if offset with the richness that the Heavy Cream brings to the dish. What you are left with is a beautiful blend of a rich chocolate flavor with a silky, creamy texture

The best things in life are often the simplest. Such is the case with this No Egg Chocolate Mousse

The beauty of this dish is it only requires 3 ingredients to make. That’s right, only 3! Chocolate, Cream, and Sugar. Even more great news is that the process of making this dish couldn’t be simpler. Just follow the below steps in our recipe by adding the ingredients into the stand mixer in the correct order and you’ll be left with an amazing tasting Chocolate Mousse dish

You can, of course, add some additional ingredients to the Chocolate Mousse when it comes to garnishing the dish. You have many options to chose from here, but some of our personal favorites are mixed berries (such as Strawberries, Raspberries, Blackberries, etc.), or a little bit of Mint. The freshness of the Fruit and Herbs creates a lovely contrast to the richness of the Chocolate Mousse. They also look amazing on the plate

You can let your creativity run wild on toppings for this recipe. Crush up some Peanuts or Cashew Nuts and sprinkle them on top for a delicious flavor and texture. Not happy with the amount of Chocolate in this dish? Why not add more Chocolate Sprinkles or Chocolate Chips on top! Go all in on the chocolate attack! There really is no rule on what you can and can’t put on your Chocolate Mousse, so go crazy and experiment with lots of different flavors and textures!

Make extra Whipped Cream to serve on the side

Whipped Heavy Cream is such an indulgence. Honestly, you could serve me up a big bowl of Whipped Cream on it’s own for my dessert after any meal and I’ll be a happy diner! Of course, this is no exception when it comes to Chocolate Mousse

We highly recommend setting aside a little bit of the Cream to serve on the side, or on top of your Chocolate Mousse. The Cream does a great job of cutting through the richness of the chocolate flavor, which can be quite intense based on the type of Chocolate you end up using. The Cream allows you to manage each mouthful to get the right level of richness, sweetness, and creaminess with each bite!

Get creative with how you plate your individual Chocolate Mousse

Just like the toppings, there’s no real ‘rule’ for how to plate your Chocolate Mousse. If you are trying to fancy up your plating, why not serve them in tall martini glasses like we’ve done in the photos in this recipe? It adds a touch of sophistication to the dish and makes it feel really special to eat

You can add whatever toppings you like to your No Egg Chocolate Mousse such as these delicious mixed berries

Not too fussy about how it looks and just want to dive in? That is, of course, totally acceptable too! There’s sometimes nothing better than simply grabbing a big spoonful (or two) of Chocolate Mousse out of the bowl and serving it with a generous helping of freshly Whipped Cream on the side. In all honesty, we made a couple in the Martini Glass and we ate the remainder of the Chocolate Mousse exactly this way too!

For this recipe you require either a stand mixer or a hand-held electric mixer. Basically, you need some kind of machinery to mix everything together! This is a lovely version of a classic Chocolate Mousse, with the added benefit of being egg free for those with an allergy. So lets get to it!

Ingredients

  • 8 oz. high quality chocolate (combination of bittersweet and / or dark)
  • 3 cups Cream
  • 2 tbsp. Powdered Sugar
  • Optional: Mixed Berries
  • Optional: Mint

Instructions

  1. Chop the chocolate into small pieces and place in a heat-proof bowl
  2. Heat 1 cup of Cream in a saucepan over medium / low heat until the cream is just about to simmer
  3. Pour the Cream over the Chocolate and let stand for 30 seconds to 1 minute and then gently whisk to combine ingredients. Place in the fridge for 20 minutes to set
  4. Place remaining 2 cups of Cream in stand mixer / electric mixer bowl and begin whisking on a medium setting. Add Powdered Sugar 1 tbsp. at a time
  5. Continue mixing until stiff peaks form on the Cream. At this point, set aside ½ the Cream for serving and mix the remaining half of the Cream with the Chocolate mixture. Incorporate the cream with a spatula into the mixture to combine, but not to deflate the Cream
  6. Either leave in the bowl or place in serving glasses and refrigerate for at least 4 hours / overnight to set the Mousse
  7. Serve the Chocolate Mousse with the Serving Cream and, if desired top with Mint and Berries
