How to make Dill Sauce for Salmon

The best part about making this sauce is that there are no complex Sauce making skills required. Unlike many other sauces such as Hollandaise, or Red Wine Reduction, this sauce doesn’t require any kind of reduction or emulsification. Instead, you simply need to prepare a few ingredients separately and simply mix them all together. What could be easier?

What are the primary ingredients in Dill Sauce

Including Salt, there is just a total of 6 ingredients required to make a perfect Dill Sauce for Salmon. They’re all plentifully available, cheap, and typically would be used for multiple dishes. Making this sauce one of the most economical sauces, as well as being ridiculously tasty

Greek Yoghurt

For our homemade Dill Sauce dish, we’re using a base of Yoghurt. Greek Yoghurt to be precise. Some variations of this sauce use Mayonnaise, however we’ve found it to be far too sweet, which can tend to overpower the flavor of the Salmon

Greek Yoghurt can be substituted for regular Yoghurt however we do recommend using Greek Yoghurt if possible. It has a wonderful flavor. Subtle, creamy, yet pronounced. It is also very healthy for you and serves as a great base for so many other recipes. You’ll find yourself using the whole tub of Greek Yoghurt for all sorts of wonderful goodies

Dill

Of course it can’t be a Dill Sauce without including Dill! This wonderful herb packs one of the most powerful flavors of all the herb kingdom. Bright, vibrant, citrus flavors are prominent in Dill however it truly has it’s own unique flavor. It’s like trying to explain how Garlic tastes. Well, it tastes like Garlic! The same could be said for Dill!

We do recommend using Dill sparingly in this recipe. Break off about 1 tsp. of Dill at a time and chop it up finely before adding to the Sauce. You can always add more if you need a bit more Dill forward flavor in the dish, and it’s always easier to add ingredients to a sauce instead of trying to remove them if you’ve added too much!

Garlic

Just a tough of Garlic is used in the sauce, but it is necessary to add another dimension of flavor to the dish. There’s nary a recipe that goes by our plates that doesn’t include some form of Garlic in it, and this sauce is no exception!

The Garlic is added raw, so just be mindful of that when adding it to the sauce. Raw Garlic has a very powerful flavor and can tend to overpower a dish. We’ve suggested only using 1 Garlic clove, which should be finely diced to avoid any large chunks in the sauce

Lemons

The backbone of this sauce is Lemons. We use them in two ways, utilizing both the Lemon Juice and Lemon Zest in the sauce. Not only do Lemons give the sauce a beautiful bright flavor, but they serve a much-needed purpose of adding a liquid element to the dish

Greek Yoghurt is quite thick and chunky, so the addition of Lemon Juice will help to smooth out the sauce, giving it a pronounced creamy texture that is slightly runny

Lemon is always a powerful flavor, so we recommend adding it sparingly and tasting as you go. Just remember that the Lemon Zest has an even more concentrated citrus flavor than the Juice, which is why we only need to add half the quantity of Zest as we do Juice

Olive Oil

At its heart this Dill Sauce for Salmon recipe is grounded in Mediterranean cooking. We’re pairing it with fish of course, so it makes sense to be enjoying it alongside ingredients that thrive close to that environment. The south of Europe, across the Mediterranean prefer Olive Oil over Butter as their primary fat content, so it makes total sense to include Olive Oil in this sauce

The Olive Oil adds that much needed fat content, which helps to balance out the acid of the Lemons and itself also adds to the creamy, velvety texture we want to achieve with this Sauce. Some good quality Olive Oil will go a long way too, with beautiful flavors that complement the Dill and Yoghurt so well!
