Crispy Air Fryer Potatoes5 (1)
Like most households, our go-to for making beautiful Crispy Roast Potatoes is in the Oven. Scatter them over a sheet pan, cover with a generous amount of Olive Oil and Salt and let the Oven do the rest. However, we were cooking our amazing 10 Hour Slow Cooked Lamb Shoulder which requires the Oven to be on a very low temperature. We wanted Potatoes with the dish so experimented with making them in the Air Fryer. To our pleasant surprise this awesome Crispy Air Fryer Potatoes dish was the result, and it tastes amazing!
Hold the skepticism about the Air Fryer until you try it, trust us you’ll be converted!
We were a little skeptical about this technique. However, we were completely transformed the moment that delicious ‘crack’ sound was heard as we bit into that beautifully crispy Potato! So, while it may seem like a lesser option for making Potatoes, trust us, it’s a great way to make them
If you’ve jammed your Oven with other dishes, where the cooking times and heat are completely different from what is needed to make Potatoes – the Air Fryer is a fantastic option. It is also a much quicker way to make Crispy Potatoes too. To achieve the same result in the Oven you’re looking at 45minutes to 1 hour easily. These amazingly Crispy Air Fryer Potatoes will be done in under 25 minutes. A great solution for time conscious home cooks
The key to success for creating perfectly Crispy Air Fryer Potatoes is Parboiling them before they go in the Air Fryer
Parboiling is the process of partially boiling (par-boil) the Potatoes before you put them in the Air Fryer. This is a critical step in the process for cooking the Potatoes. It ensures that the insides of the Potatoes get cooked before they go in the Air Fryer. They then get roasted in the Air Fryer to complete the cook, and to get that lovely, crispy outside that we all want with a great roast Potato
Place the Sliced-up Potato chunks into cold water that has been heavily seasoned with Salt. An aggressively salted water will season the Potatoes, so be very liberal with your Salt! You then heat up the water to a boiling point, then drain them about 3 – 4 minutes after the water begins to boil
Cooking the Potatoes from cold water is a great process as it slowly cooks the Potatoes as the water gradually heats. Placing the Potatoes directly into boiling water isn’t great for parboiling as you’ll cook the outside far quicker than the inside
The final step of the parboiling process is to get a beautiful, gnarly outside on the Potatoes. To do this, once strained, place the Potatoes back in the Pot. Place the lid onto the Pot then shake them around for a few seconds. The shaking process will begin to break apart the outsides of the Potatoes, which leaves a lovely broken, gnarly outside
This will form these odd shapes on the outside of the Potatoes which will crisp up quickly. It’s a great technique to achieve an awesome, crispy texture on your Potatoes once they go in the Air Fryer
Be sure not to overload your Air Fryer with Potatoes. If needed you can prepare them in several batches
This one should be pretty self-explanatory, but it is a critical step. The Air Fryer needs circulation to appropriately cook your food. If you overload the Air Fryer with Potatoes they will not cook evenly and will very likely not crisp up. Our recommendation is to break up the cooking into two batches, and then combine them all at the end to re-heat once you’re ready to serve. Easy!
Add some good quality Olive Oil to the Potatoes as they go into the Air Fryer
The fat of the Olive Oil is what helps to crisp up the Potatoes. They also add a lovely, richness to the Potatoes which tastes amazing. You can skip this step if you like, however this step will ensure you’ll get beautiful Crispy Air Fryer Potatoes. Also, who would skip a step that adds flavor to a recipe? Not us!
Just drizzle a generous amount of Olive Oil over the Potatoes after you’ve placed them into the Air Fryer basket. There is no need to be too precise, just ensure each Potatoes gets a good amount of Oil on them. The Air Frying process will require you to flip the Potatoes halfway through to ensure both sides get crispy. So, halfway through, flip them, and drizzle a little more Oil on the other side to get a lovely crispy coating all over
