Pepperoni Pizza Rolls with Homemade Pizza Dough5 (1)
When you’re looking for great party food that will impress everyone, you simply cannot go wrong with Homemade Pepperoni Pizza Rolls. I’d bet good money that you’ll have none of these left if you whip this recipe out at your next gathering. They’re a party favorite, and with good reason. They taste phenomenal!
For those unfamiliar with a Pizza Roll, it is essentially a Pizza that has been rolled up into a hand-held pocket of goodness. The dough completely encases the filling, while is rolled into an almost spiral-like design internally. The Pizza Roll is baked as one large roll, then cut into individual slices for you to dive into. Typically, it is served alongside a beautiful Marinara Sauce for dipping. They’re a great dish for appetizers, as well as a stand-alone dinner. It looks amazing and tastes great!
The Inspiration behind the creation of our Pepperoni Pizza Rolls
This is a recipe that was inspired by the classic Stromboli, which is a staple in the Northeast USA. We had made some delicious Pizza Dough and wanted to try a rolled preparation with Pepperoni Filling
The consistency of the dough lends itself perfectly to creating more of a Pizza Roll type consistency, and less that of a Stromboli, which is typically a bit lighter. The dough in this recipe is super crunchy when baked, so the result is much more on the Pizza Roll consistency than a typical Stromboli
Not that we’re complaining or anything! This recipe produces the most amazing tasting Pizza Rolls. The crispiness of the Dough is just perfect alongside the classic filling of Tomato Sauce, Pepperoni, and of course, Mozzarella Cheese
Sure, you could buy ready-made Pizza Dough, but it’s so much better when you make your own!
There’s something special about making your own dough from scratch. The idea that an entire meal that you’ve created has started out with raw ingredients that you’ve turned into a wonderful dish is so fulfilling. What’s more, making your own dough is so easy to do and saves a load of money. The only drawback when making your own dough from scratch is you need time
To allow for the dough to adequately rest, you must create the Dough a day in advance. Mix together the Flour, Yeast, Water, Sugar, and Salt then allow it to prove overnight in the refrigerator. This process enables the dough to aerate which will produce the most wonderful, crispy dough for your Homemade Pepperoni Pizza Rolls
Once you’re ready to cook, take the dough out of the refrigerator and allow it to come to room temperature. Split the dough into two equal sized pieces, allow it to rest for a little longer, then form into the shape needed to begin rolling into one, long Pizza Roll. Fill it with all the goodies and then bake to perfection!
For the best result, 00 Flour and San Marzano Tomatoes are the way to go
If you can get hold of them, using 00 Flour and San Marzano Tomatoes will achieve the best result. 00 Flour is typically used when making Pizza, and you’ll achieve the lightest, crunchiest texture for your dough if you use this type of dough. However, using the good old All-Purpose Flour will still yield an amazing result
Tomato types are the same. The traditional Tomatoes that are used in creating Pizza Sauce is San Marzano. They are quite widely available in most grocery stores these days and produce the best flavor for a good Pizza Sauce base. Again, like the flour though, it isn’t a deal breaker if you can’t find them. We used Mutti brand Pizza Sauce which uses Rotondo di Parma tomatoes. They taste amazing in this recipe
For something a little different, try our Homemade Enchilada Sauce in these Pepperoni Pizza Rolls
Our recipe below shows you how to make a simple and delicious Tomato based sauce for the Pepperoni Pizza Rolls. If you are looking for something a little different, however, we recommend giving our delicious Homemade Enchilada Sauce a try. It is still very much a Tomato-based sauce; however, the sauce is also flavored with roasted Bell Peppers which gives it a beautiful flavor
The sauce does have a little bit of heat to it as well. If you’re fans of heat, and making some Pizza Rolls with a little bit of a twist then we highly recommend giving the Enchilada Sauce a go. If you want to stick to the traditional recipe, we’ve got you covered too. Our Simple Tomato-based Pizza sauce is beautiful, and has a wonderful texture that is perfect for the Pepperoni Pizza Rolls
To add color and crunch, brush the prepared Pizza Roll with melted Butter before it goes into the oven
Who doesn’t love a bit of melted butter in their meal? It’s an optional step for these Pizza Rolls, but if you want a lovely golden crust and a little bit more ‘crunch’, then you want to be doing this step. Once you’re ready to bake, melt about 1 tbsp. of Butter and then generously brush it all over the dough
When the butter cooks, it will help to slightly caramelize the dough and give it a beautiful color. It’ll also add some lovely flavor to the dough. Definitely worth it!

Pepperoni Pizza Rolls Recipe
Ingredients
- 312g All Purpose Flour or 00 Flour
- 414ml Water (0.85 cups)
- 1 tsp. Yeast
- ½ tsp. Sugar
- ½ tsp. Salt
- 3 tbsp. Olive Oil
- 4 oz. Mozzarella Cheese, grated
- 3 oz. / 80g sliced Pepperoni
- 1 tbsp. Unsalted Butter
For the Sauce
- 2 Shallots, finely diced
- 3 Garlic Cloves, finely diced
- 400ml Canned Tomato Puree
- 1 tbsp. Tomato Paste
- ½ cup Red Wine (optional)
- Salt
Equipment Needed: Stand Mixer
Instructions
- Bloom the Yeast by placing it into your mixing bowl along with the Water which needs to be heated to between 100F – 110F. Mix together and let sit for 5 minutes. Check out this video on how to bloom yeast
- Add the Flour, Salt, and Sugar then place the mixture in your Stand Mixer. Mix on low for 1 minute to combine all the ingredients, then increase to medium and mix for 5 minutes
- In a large bowl, add 1 tbsp. of Olive Oil. Place the dough into the Bowl with Olive Oil and drizzle a little more Oil over the top. Cover with cling film and refrigerate overnight to prove
- When ready to cook, remove the dough from the refrigerator and bring up to room temperature. Remove the dough from the Bowl, shape into a ball then place back into the bowl. Cover, and rest for a further 1 hour
To make the Pizza Sauce
- While the dough is resting, heat a medium sized saucepan over medium heat with 1 tbsp. of Olive Oil. Once hot, add the Shallots and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally
- Add Garlic and Red Wine and cook until the wine has reduced. Add Tomato Paste and cook for 1 minute, then add the Tomato Puree. Simmer for 30 minutes to reduce. Season with Salt, then turn off heat then let cool
Assembling the Pepperoni Pizza Rolls
- Remove the dough from the bowl and place on a large flat surface that has been sprinkled with Flour. The Flour will help prevent the dough from sticking to the surface. Carefully shape the dough into a large rectangle. Roll it out with a rolling pin to create a large, thin layer of dough
- Add the filling to the bottom half of the Dough. Starting first with the Pizza Sauce (use about half), then layer on the Pepperoni and finish with Cheese
- Carefully roll the dough from the longest side until you create a log. Try to roll the dough as tight as you can to avoid there being any leaks during cooking. Press the two ends of the dough against each other to form a seal
- Melt the butter then brush liberally over the dough. Bake for 20 minutes in the Oven pre-heated to 400F. Once golden-brown, remove and let rest for 5 minutes before serving
- To serve, cut the Pizza Roll into individual portions and serve alongside the remaining Pizza Sauce for dipping
