Puff Pastry Stromboli0 (0)
Stromboli is a famous dish that is very popular in the Northeast of the USA. A dish that was perfected by Italian migrants over generations, it’s a rolled bread that is filled with a delicious filling of Tomato Sauce, Pepperoni, and Mozzarella Cheese. This is not your traditional Stromboli recipe however, as instead of using a baked bread, this recipe uses Puff Pastry! That’s right! For those puff pastry fans out there, look no further than this amazing Puff Pastry Stromboli for an awesome lunch or appetizer
How to make Puff Pastry Stromboli
Making your own homemade Puff Pastry Stromboli is very easy. The primary ingredients are Puff Pastry, Pepperoni, Mozzarella, and a Tomato Sauce. Each of these elements to the dish are easy to make, and even easier to purchase from the grocery store!
Store-bought Puff Pastry is more than suitable
We’re making things super easy with this recipe and not asking that you make your own Puff Pastry. Just get some good quality store-bought Puff Pastry, it’ll more than suffice for making a great Stromboli. It also saves you hours; no need to be making dough and creating Pastry laminations when it’s already been done for you!
Spend some time getting the best flavor and consistency with the Tomato Sauce
A simple Tomato based sauce is the key for this dish. However, like all Tomato based sauces it does require a little bit of time for the flavors to concentrate and for the sauce to reduce. Depending on how thick you want your sauce will determine how long you reduce it for. We’ve found that about 20 minutes is more than enough time to build a great flavor in the sauce while getting the right consistency
Just ensure that you’re using some good quality Canned Tomatoes. For a true, authentic flavor you can’t go past San Marzano tomatoes, but by no means are they a mandatory for this dish. We used Mutti canned Tomatoes, and they came out great
Lots of Mozzarella!
Finally, good quality Mozzarella and Pepperoni will complete the dish. For the Mozzarella, try to avoid the really fancy stuff that is swimming in brine (Burrata basically). Go with the Mozzarella that’s packed up in plastic, it’s got a better texture and melts better in the Puff Pastry once it all goes into the oven
For a unique twist on the Tomato Sauce, why not try our fun Enchilada Sauce instead!
We’ve already thrown tradition out the window with this recipe given the use of Puff Pastry, so why stop there? For an all-out flavor explosion and something unique, you can replace the traditional Tomato sauce recipe we’ve listed below with a fun, spicy Enchilada Sauce!
You will still get the typical flavors of Stromboli with this sauce. The main difference is the Sauce has a smoky, peppery flavor profile, which comes from the Roasted Bell Peppers and Chipotles. We roast our Vegetables and then blitz them in the food processor. They’re then added to a traditional Tomato-based sauce along with the Chipotles to add some heat and smokiness. For even more heat, why not add Cayenne Pepper to the mix!

As always, the Puff Pastry Stromboli is best eaten straight away, but you can freeze it for later
Any dish involving Puff Pastry is always best eaten immediately. Let it cool slightly once it’s cooked as it’ll be piping hot. Then slice it into thick pieces and serve it alongside the remaining Tomato Sauce for some dipping. It’s an awesome bite of food that’s great for gatherings, or simply when you’re wanting to treat yourself to a tasty lunch
This recipe will easily serve 4 people, so if you’ve got leftovers you can freeze it. It’ll keep for a couple of weeks in the Freezer, so you’ve got plenty of time to enjoy it later. To reheat, thaw it out then put it into the oven or Air Fryer over a relatively low temperature until warmed throughout and crispy

Puff Pastry Stromboli Recipe
Ingredients
- Heat the Olive Oil in a saucepan over medium heat, then add the Shallot and cook for 4 minutes until tender. Add Garlic, cook for 1 more minute then add the Tomato Paste and Canned Tomatoes
- Bring the Sauce to a boil, reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes until the sauce thickens. Season with Salt and Dried Oregano then set aside to cool
- Sprinkle the Flour over a flat, clean surface then place your Puff Pastry on top to prevent it from sticking. Roll out the Puff Pastry to flatten it a bit further
- Layer half of the Sauce, Pepperoni slices, and Mozzarella Cheese (in that order) on one half of the Puff Pastry, then brush some Egg wash on either side of the Pastry
- Carefully roll the Puff pastry over the filling, and continue to roll until the two edges meet, forming a tight, cylinder. Transfer to a Sheet Pan lined with a baking sheet and brush more Egg wash over the pastry
- Bake in the Oven set to 350F for 15 minutes, until the Puff Pastry is a dark golden-brown color. Remove from Oven and allow to cool for a few minutes before cutting into slices and serving with the remaining Sauce for dipping
