What was once a little bit of a secret that those Californians kept to themselves is now a US wide and worldwide phenomenon. Yes, In-n-Out Burger has become one of the most successful Burger franchise in the country. With good reason too, their food is delicious and affordable. Some of their most famous dishes are the classic Double-Double Burger, and, perhaps even more famous – their Animal Style In N Out Fries

In-N-Out Burger has a ridiculously large ‘off the menu’ menu where you can order seemingly any style or combination of food imaginable. Vegetarian options, Keto options (lettuce wraps instead of buns), and their famous Animal Style Sauce which can be slathered onto anything you order, including their Fries

It’s no secret the In N Out Fries aren’t great, but the Animal Style version is!

They’re really not that great Fries, and you know it. When it comes to fast food fries there’s not many people that would rank In N Out fries as their number one. But that’s totally ok. The lackluster Fries are part of the charm of eating at In N Out. You order them anyway, because of course you do!

The fires are saved by making them Animal Style. Adding this delicious topping helps to drown out the lack of flavor in those fries and replaces it with the most delicious tasting bites. They’re super messy too which is awesome, so you end up with food all over your hands, face, arms, and wherever else it ends up when you’re wolfing these down along with a great Burger

What is Animal Style?

Making your Fries ‘Animal Style’ at In N Out Burger means adding a delicious Sauce which consists of a delicious mixture of Mayonnaise, Ketchup, and Yellow Mustard. We’ve tested the ratios of these three ingredients a lot and feel we’ve got it down. Essentially, you’re looking at 2 parts Mayonnaise to 1 part each of Ketchup and Mustard. It’s an amazing, sweet, and savory sauce which is perfect on Fries and burgers

The other amazing additions to the Animal Style In N Out Fries is Grilled Onions and Pickles. The Grilled Onions are diced into small pieces and grilled to dark-golden, caramelized onion perfection. Not too dissimilar to our awesome Caramelized Onions recipe. They’re generously applied straight on top of the fries and add such a richness to the meal

The Pickles are perhaps an overlooked, but critical ingredient in Animal Style Sauce. Not only are finely chopped Pickles used, but so is the Pickle Juice / Pickle Brine. They add a lovely tartness and acidic hit to the sauce, which is much needed to cut through all the sweetness. No burger should be served without Pickles, and the same goes for Animal Style Sauce in our opinion

American Cheese all the way!

Finally, and perhaps an obvious one. But smother the Fries with melty cheese. This one doesn’t really need any justification. It’s cheese on French Fries. Just do it! For the most authentic and best quality result, use processed American Cheese

There is simply no substitute for it when making fast food at home. Just try using other fancy cheeses and see the result, it’s just not the same. Also, who wants Gruyere Cheese on Fries anyway? American Cheese all the way!

This is our shortcut recipe for Easy Animal Style In N Out Fries

Ok we’ll admit it. For this recipe we’re using frozen fries. Guess what? There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that either! When it comes to making Fries for dinner, it is almost always easier to get the pre-cooked frozen stuff from the grocery store freezer

There are some really good quality products there too. We’ve found that if you try a couple of different brand you’ll eventually stumble across the one that you like. So, you will be required to do a lot of research (That research being to eat a lot of French Fries!)

You can choose either Shoestring or Thick Cut French Fries, whatever you prefer

The true authentic Animal Style In N Out Fries are made with shoestring style fries. They’re cut using an awesome potato cutting machine fresh in the store. The Potato is placed in the cutter and a lever is pulled down which slices them into perfectly thin fries. It’s cool to watch actually

The choice of Fries is totally up to you. These are Homemade In N Out Style Fries anyway, so make them how you want! For the photos in this recipe we went for a thicker cut of Fries. It really doesn’t matter which ones you choose. We just felt like the thicker cut style fries when we cooked them up. Either style will work just as well. You can also use wedges, or even Sweet Potato Fries if you’re looking for something a little unique and different

You can use any type of fries you want to perfect the Animal Style In N Out Fries. Whatever is your favorite is the ones to use!

Any Onions will work, however for our Homemade In N Out Animal Style Fries we prefer Yellow or Spanish Onions

If you’re familiar with our Caramelized Onions recipe you’ll notice we’re not fussy about what Onions to use when Caramelizing. They all end up great. As you break down the Onions while cooking them, all of the bitterness and water evaporates, and you’re left with beautiful, sweet Onions

The sweetest Onions when you caramelize them are Red Onions, which we use quite a lot. However, given this dish is already sweet with the sauce, a slightly more subtle Onion works well. Spanish or Yellow Onions are therefore a great choice

Just remember that while you think the 2 Onions in this recipe is too much, it really isn’t. Onions break down so much when cooked and they’ll end up being about 15% of their original size. That’s because all the moisture in the Onions disappears. So, 2 Onions minimum please!

Broil all the ingredients together at the end for a beautiful, irresistible result

Once your Fries are done, Sauce is made and the Onions are cooked, the final step is to combine them and give them a quick broil. Use an oven safe pan / tray / bowl and add the Fries, Cheese, Sauce, and Onions (in that order). Give them a quick broil so that beautiful Cheese melts all over the Fries and the Onions and Sauce get lovely and warm

It’s such a fun dish to just dive into with your hands too. So, serve the bowl on the table along with a bunch of napkins as it tends to get messy! Just check that the bowl isn’t too hot as it’s come out of the broiler. If it is, just transfer the Fries to a separate plate then tuck in!

Animal Style In N Out Fries Recipe

Ingredients

  • 3 cups Frozen French Fries
  • 2 Yellow / Spanish Onions – finely diced
  • 2 slices of American Cheese, torn into pieces
  • 4 tbsp. Japanese Kewpie Mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp. Ketchup
  • 2 tbsp. Yellow Mustard
  • 6 Pickle Slices (in brine), chopped
  • 1 tsp. of Pickle Brine
  • Salt

Instructions

  1. Melt the Butter in a medium sized saucepan over medium heat, then add the diced Onions and ½ tsp. of Salt. Cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally until the Onions have caramelized and turned a dark golden-brown color.
  2. While the Onions are cooking, combine the Mayonnaise, Ketchup, Yellow Mustard, Chopped Pickles, Pickle Brine, and ½ tsp. Salt into a small bowl
  3. Mix well then taste the Sauce. Adjust ingredients based on your personal preference (eg: for more sweetness, add Ketchup, for more tanginess, add more Pickles and Pickle Juice)
  4. Set Sauce aside while you pre-heat the Oven to 425 F and lay out the Fries onto a large baking pan. Cover the entire surface with Fries, but ensure they do not overlap
  5. Cook fries for 20 – 25 minutes, turning once. Once the Fries are crispy and golden brown they are done. Remove from Oven
  6. Place the Fries onto an oven safe serving dish (such as a ceramic bowl). Cover with Cheese, Caramelized Onions, and finally the Sauce. Broil for 2 minutes to melt the cheese and re-heat the Onions
  7. Remove from Oven and serve while hot

All done! We hope you’ve enjoyed this Homemade In N Out Animal Style Fries. The perfect match to pair with these fries is, of course, a Homemade Smash Burger, which we’ve got you covered on
