Salmon Poke Bowl5 (1)
This is our ‘go-to’ Salmon Poke Bowl recipe that we’re sure that you will love. Like any good fresh Seafood dish it is the simplicity of the recipe that makes it so good. The key to a great Salmon Poke Bowl lies in getting great ingredients
How to make the best Salmon Poke Bowl
A lovely piece of Fresh Salmon that is great for eating raw will make all of the difference to this dish. Depending on where you are in the world this may differ. We would highly recommend talking to your local fish monger about what they would recommend. Fresh Atlantic Salmon has always been a great choice for us in the US. The lighter colored Salmon which has a high fat content (the good kind!) and full of flavor. Pacific Salmon varieties are also great. Again, just go with the best ingredients to your local area and you cannot go wrong
Preparing the Salmon correctly
The Salmon in a Poke Bowl doesn’t have the skin, so you will need to remove that if you haven’t purchased skinless Salmon. Removing the Salmon skin is quite easy, it’s just all about technique. We’ve put a video on our YouTube Channel here which shows you the best, and easiest way to remove the Salmon Skin effortlessly
Cut the Salmon into bite-sized pieces and then place the pieces in a bowl filled with a combination of Soy Sauce, Ponzu, and Sesame Oil. The acid in these ingredients will ‘cook’ the Salmon, like how Lemon and Lime do in a Ceviche. We also like to add Raw Onions in here too to give them a bit of a pickle. We find that it takes a bit of the harshness and bitterness out of the raw Onion
Prepare Seasonable Vegetables to include in your Salmon Poke Bowl
The second key to a lovely Salmon Poke Bowl recipe is the fruit and vegetables. Like any good local Poke shop you should be able to customize the Poke Bowl to your preferred tastes. Be mindful of the seasonality of fruit and vegetables when preparing the meal too. Fruit and Vegetables that are in season will naturally taste better, so try to opt for those. We made this recipe in late spring, so those summer fruits were really coming into season. Mango was a great choice for us, as were Tomatoes and Bell Peppers
Perhaps the most important ingredient of all in Salmon Poke Bowl is the Rice
A good Salmon Poke Bowl is best served with Sushi Rice. It’s quite easy to make at home. Yes, we understand it’s not at Sushi Master Levels, however it’s more than serviceable for some tasty homemade Sushi Rice!
Making your own Sushi Rice at home is not really that difficult. The techniques do differ quite considerably to making regular rice, but it is overall not too difficult, and everyone will be able to make it
The first step is to ensure you are using specific Sushi Rice, and not other popular types of Rice like Jasmine, Basmati, or Long grain. Sushi Rice is very popular these days so it should be available in most grocery stores. If you can’t find it, you will be able to find some at your Asian specialty grocery store
It is important that you first strain all the excess starch off the Sushi Rice before it is cooked. Simply place the rice into a sieve and rinse it with cold water. Once cleaned, cooking Sushi Rice follows a typical approach to rice making. Place it into a saucepan with boiling water. The portions are the same as regular rice too. 1 cup of Rice = 1 ½ cups of water. 2 cups of Rice = 3 cups of water, and so on
Once you’ve added the Rice to boiling water, drop the heat to a low simmer
This is our go-to cooking trick for making perfect rice. Once the Rice is in the pot with hot water, you immediately drop the heat to a low simmer. Cover and cook for 8 minutes. Then, turn off the heat but keep the lid on. Let the rice continue to cook for another 7 minutes and it will be cooked perfectly
Then, and this is where Sushi Rice making differs, you add Rice Wine Vinegar and Salt to the Sushi Rice. Mix it well with a wooden spoon to combine, and then it is ready to eat! We’d recommend preparing all your raw ingredients and leave the Sushi Rice as the last step before serving

- 1 Mango, peeled and diced
- 1 cup Cherry Tomatoes, halved

- ½ Cucumber, peeled, seeded and diced
- 1 Carrot, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp. Chopped Peanuts
- 1 tbsp. Chopped Scallions
