An American staple. A perfect pairing with Pork. A food icon. We’re talking of course about the classic Apple Sauce! Bursting with sweet and tangy flavor, there is no better accompaniment to a beautiful piece of Roast Pork than the humble Apple Sauce. There is just something so magical about tucking into a delicious roast dinner with Apple Sauce isn’t there? It immediately transports you to family meals in the fall with your family. It’s starting to get a little bit cold outside, but that’s so far from your concerns as you’re inside with you’re loved ones tucking into a delicious meal!

What makes a good Apple Sauce?

So the answer to this is really in what type of Apple to use. The best pick for a great Apple Sauce is to use a Golden Delicious or Fuji Apples. Apples that are naturally higher in their sugar content will ultimately lead to a sweeter overall sauce. There is no harm in trying out all kinds of apples to see which flavor profile you prefer. The Granny Smith Apple is an interesting choice also, as it brings much more of a tartness and sharpness to the sauce – less sweet overall

The other ingredient is of course sugar. The sweetness of the sauce is primarily based on how much sugar you add. We’d recommend starting off with a little bit of sugar, perhaps 1 tsp. and add more as you’re cooking to get the desired sweetness you’re after

Who says Apple Sauce has to be intensely sweet? Not us! In fact, sometimes the best Apple Sauce is one that brings a freshness, and tartness to the recipe. Really you should be using the right Apples in your Apple sauce based on the kind of dish you’re pairing it with

Traditionally Appl3 Sauce is paired with Yummy Pork recipes, many times Roast Pork. If you’re fans of Roast Pork like we are you know it can be quite a heavy, fatty dish to eat. Roasting Pork, especially with the skin produced a rich, sweet flavor. It tastes amazing, however pairing a naturally sweet protein with more sweetness in the sauce doesn’t make all that much sense. Therefore in that instance, an Apple Sauce recipe such as this one is a perfect choice

The tartness that the Green Apples bring to the recipe cuts through the fattiness of Pork exceptionally well. So, if you’re making some of our yummy Roast Pork recipes such as our Crispy Pork Belly or Crispy Roast Pork Shoulder, then the Green Apple Classic Apple Sauce is the way to go

In these instances, we’d recommend using much sweeter Apples, with the Fuji Apple being the preferred choice. So depending on your dish, choose your Apples wisely!

Classic Apple Sauce Recipe

Ingredients

  • 4 Apples, cored, peeled, and diced
  • 1 tbsp. Brown Sugar
  • 1 tsp. Cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. Salt

Instructions

  1. Begin by preparing your Apples. Peel off their skin and cut into cubes about 1 inch thick. The cutting doesn’t need to be precise as they’ll be turned into a puree. Just cut them into manageable sizes for the cooking process and remove the core
  2. Add your apples into a medium saucepan on a low heat. Add the Salt and Sugar, then cover
  3. After about 5 minutes the Apples will be broken down and easy to mash. Using a Potato Masher, mash the Apples so they are smooth. To get a completely smooth texture, blitz the Apples in a blender, however keeping it a little chunky and mashing by hand works fine too
  4. Add the Cinnamon and check for seasoning. Depending on the type of Apple you use you may want to add more Sugar. So continue to cook for a further 5 minutes to reduce and adjust the seasoning of Sugar and Salt to your taste. Once you’re happy with the result, serve immediately
