This is the kind of dish you eat by the fire with loved ones with a nice glass of wine and then fall asleep once you’ve finished
We love this Smoked Trout Pie. It’s an incredibly rich dish with bold flavors at every turn. That beautiful smoky flavor from the Smoked Fish. The sharp and creamy flavor of the Cheesy Mashed Potatoes. The richness of those beautiful Caramelized Onions. This dish has got it all
This is 100% a dinner dish where your only plans after eating it are to go to bed! It’s very hearty so I wouldn’t be cooking this if you’ve made plans afterwards! Cook it. Eat it, go to bed! If that sounds like an ideal night for you then this is the dish for you
The little secret of this amazing Smoked Trout Pie – you don’t have to Smoke the Trout!
That’s right! I mean look if you want to smoke your own Fish by all means go ahead. For most home cooks access to a smoker and enough space to not smoke out your house / neighbors is limited! So in that case we’ve prepared this recipe on the assumption that you won’t be smoking your own fish
Instead, simply pick up some Smoked Fish from your local grocery store or fish monger. Smoked Trout, Cod, and Salmon are usually the most common types of smoked fish that all work very well for this recipe. So, if you can’t find Trout, we’d recommend Cod as your second choice. The recipe won’t change based on the fish you find, so you’re all good
This is a heavy dish perfect for Winter. Due to the inclusion of those ingredients that signify comfort food
This is the recipe that you make when it’s cold, you’re hungry, and you don’t care about eating healthy. Be healthy tomorrow! It’s too cold right now, so cook what you want to eat that will make you warm and happy inside
This dish is loaded with ingredients that represent warmth, and comfort food: Cheese, Potatoes and Heavy Cream. If there ever was a holy trilogy of comfort food ingredients those three very much maybe it. Boil some beautiful Potatoes then mash them to a velvety, creamy texture. Add in some Heavy Cream for even more luxury and creaminess in the Potatoes. Finally, add a load of Cheddar Cheese and you’ve got the makings of a beautiful pie filling
We then combine that with the Trout, which has also had a lovely bath in some Heavy Cream to complete this ridiculously tasty pie filling
Finally, we add another beautiful comfort food and one of our all-time favorites – Caramelized Onions! Yes, the ‘crust’ of this delicious Pie is made of none other than beautifully Caramelized Onions that, you guessed it, have also been cooked in the Cream! This dish is truly decadent, comfort food at its finest. And we love it!

Smoked Trout Pie Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 whole smoked Fish (Trout, Cod, Salmon etc.)
- 3 Red Onions, sliced
- 3 large Potatoes, peeled and chopped
- 1 cup Heavy Cream
- 2 tbsp. Unsalted Butter
- 2 cups Sharp Cheddar cheese, grated
- Salt
Instructions
- Begin by removing the bones from the Fish. Given the fish has already been cooked the bones should quite easily just come away from the fish. Try to keep the fish pieces as intact as possible as it will make the cooking process a bit easier
- In a large frypan add the Cream and bring to a simmer. Add the Fish pieces and poach in the cream for 10 minutes. Remove the fish pieces and set aside
- Continue to simmer the Cream until it has reduced by about half and started to thicken slightly. Remove from pan and set aside
- Add the Onions to the pan and increase the heat to medium. Cook for 10 – 15 minutes until the Onions begin to Caramelize. Add half the Cream mixture back into the pan and combine well with the Onions. Remove from heat and set aside
- Place the Potatoes into a medium sized pot filled with cold water and 1 tbsp. of Salt. Bring to a boil and cook for 10 minutes until the Potatoes are tender. You should be able to easily insert a knife into the potatoes with no resistance
- Drain the potatoes and add the Butter and remaining Cream then mash thoroughly to combine. We don’t need a silky texture so your hand masher will work fine. Once mashed, add the Cheese and combine. This will thicken the potatoes significantly
- In a large baking pan, layer the Mashed Potatoes evenly across the bottom of the pan. Then add the Fish, and finally add the Creamy Onion mixture. If you like you can grate some more cheese over the top however this step is optional
- Bake at 350 degrees for 20 – 25 minutes until the top is beautiful and golden then serve while hot
