Shakshuka Toast
This wonderfully simple and tasty breakfast dish combined two all-time favorite breakfasts into one amazing meal. Our Shakshuka Toast represents all the hallmark characteristics of a Shakshuka, but it’s served on top of the Toast instead of it being on the side. This is a fantastic Breakfast (or Lunch or Dinner) recipe that has three separate and unique components, all of which are completely customizable. Tomato Sauce, the Bread, and of course, the Eggs
Difference between this dish and traditional Shakshuka
A traditional Shakshuka is a North African dish which consists of a Tomato-based Sauce that’s prepared in an oven-safe frying pan. Once the Sauce has been developed and cooked down slightly, Whole Eggs are cracked right into the pan, using divots created in the Sauce
The pan is then placed directly into the oven or broiler and baked until the Eggs are perfectly cooked, with a gooey, runny Yolk. It’s a fun dish to make, but for many it becomes quite an epic and hearty meal, and otherwise needs to be shared as a communal plate of food

In our Shakshuka Toast recipe the components are prepared separately, and as individual portions. This means you can make as much or as little as you want depending on how many folks you’re cooking for. It’s a much more flexible option than a traditional Shakshuka, yet still carries all those wonderful flavors
If you’re interested in a traditional Shakshuka recipe then we’ve got some good news for you! We’ve got a beautiful Spicy Harissa Shakshuka recipe here that’s worth checking out
How to make our Shakshuka Toast
To kick things off we make a beautiful Tomato Sauce that’s generously spread over Toast when served. We fry down some Onions in a bit of Oil and then add some Harissa Paste and Garlic. If you don’t have Harissa Paste you can just use Tomato Paste, or simply omit it
Next, add some Canned Tomatoes (either crushed or diced, try to avoid whole Tomatoes) along with a spice mix of Cumin Powder and Smoked Paprika. Add some Salt and Pepper and cook the Sauce down for about 10 – 15 minutes until it’s thickened enough to easily be spread onto Toast
Timing is everything with this dish, as you want all elements to come out hot. So, while the Sauce is simmering away on the stovetop prepare your Toast and Eggs

What Toast should you use?
You can really use any Toast you like for our Shakshuka Toast recipe. However, I highly recommend going for some thick-cut pieces of Bread, preferably Turkish Bread. Turkish Bread is light and airy, and has an amazing flavor when toasted
You can typically get it in large loafs, so I recommend slicing it completely down the middle to create two equal portions. Then, simply cut off individual portions of Toast for each serving you plan on making. Remember, make the Toast large enough so that 1 Fried Egg will easily fit on top
Other Toast that would be great in this dish is thick-cut Texas Toast as well as Sourdough Toast. Kaiser Rolls will work well. Honestly, any type of Toast you like that can be cut thick enough to hold the Sauce will work
Then, simply Toast the Bread until it’s golden-brown and crispy. You can do this anyway you like. Bake it in the oven, put it under the broiler, or simply throw it into the Toaster. We actually used our Air Fryer for this recipe, and the Toast came out perfect

Preparing your Eggs
With the Toast done it’s time to move onto the Eggs. Now, in a traditional Shakshuka the Eggs are baked, but that’ll be a little challenging for this dish as we’re preparing them separately. For our Shakshuka Toast we recommend simply pan frying them with a little bit of Oil and serve them sunny side up
You’ll get a perfectly cooked Egg with a wonderfully runny Egg Yolk that breaks beautifully into the Toast when served. Another fun option would be Poached Eggs as you’ll achieve a similar consistency and texture. Just make sure your Eggs are done last, so that they can be placed directly onto the Shakshuka Toast right before serving when they’re piping hot
Finishing the Dish
With all components now complete the final step is assembly. It’s breakfast, so there’s no need to be too fancy about anything. So, slathered a more than generous helping of the Tomato Sauce directly onto your Toast and then top it with the Egg

To finish the Dish, we recommend adding some freshly chopped Dill and crumbled Feta Cheese. The Dill has a powerful and amazing flavor that really adds some depth to the dish. Feta Cheese also offers a beautiful texture and flavor to the Shakshuka Toast. Just remember that Feta Cheese can be Salty, so taste it beforehand and avoid over seasoning your Sauce if you’re using a Salty Feta Cheese
The dish is now done and ready to be enjoyed! What I love about this recipe is you can mix and match flavors however you like. Adding Harissa to the Sauce gives it a wonderful flavor. You can also try adding some diced Bell Peppers to the Sauce for some sweetness
Eggs can be prepared however you like (although I’d recommend avoiding Scrambled Eggs if possible) and you can alternative the Cheeses. Try Mexican Cotija Cheese for some fun flavor and textures. For the Herbs, some alternatives for Dill can be Parsley or Tarragon to bring some unique flavors to the dish
