How to make Garlic Butter Steak and Potatoes
This dish is so incredibly easy to make, as it only requires one pan. For this dish we used a stainless-steel sauté pan, and it was a great choice. You will want to use a pot / pan that conducts heat well, as it will ensure the dish cooks thoroughly and evenly. Cast Iron Pans will also work very well for this dish
As the name of the recipe suggests, the two star ingredients are Steak and Potatoes. For the Potatoes I don’t think you need to be too fussy. We’re pan frying them so they’re going to turn out great whichever ones you use. Russet and Yukon Gold are always great Potatoes for any occasion, but just grab what you can
To prepare the Potatoes, peel them and cut them into bite-sized pieces. The larger the pieces you cut, the longer the cooking time will take. Bite-sized pieces are ideal, and will take about 30 minutes to cook in the pan
What cut of Steak is best for this dish?
As this recipe is essentially a pan-fried Steak dish I would recommend avoiding any kind of stewing meats. Think about what Steak generally works great in a pan and it’ll work well in this recipe. For our dish we used Hanger Steak, which is a beefy, flavorful cut that we love to cook
Other great cuts to use will be Sirloin, Rump, Flat Iron, or Tri Tip. The key is to get a steak that’ll cut up nicely into chunks and will be nice and tender when pan fried. Beef Tenderloin / Filet is another great option, but that does get a bit pricy, especially since we’ll be needing about 18 oz. / 500g of it
Before we start cooking, season the Steak generously with Salt and Pepper on all sizes. For the best result, allow the Steak to come up to room temperature (or near abouts). This will ensure a evener cook throughout

Cooking the Steak
The first step in cooking this Garlic Butter Steak and Potatoes dish is to cook the Steak. Add some neutral frying Oil to the pan and once hot, place the Steak in the center and cook over a medium high heat for 4 – 5 minutes on each side
Depending on what type of Steak you’re using, and its size will vary how long it will need to cook for. We’re aiming to take the Steak off the heat when it’s rare, and allowing it to rest up to a medium rare temperature
We recommend using a meat thermometer to accurately measure the internal temperature of the Steak. Once the internal temperature of the Steak hits 110F, remove it from the pan and set it aside to rest for 15 minutes. Once rested, you can slice it into bite-sized pieces as it will be returned to the pan later

Time to add the Potatoes to the pan
In the same pan, melt half the Butter (about 2 tbsp.) along with some Olive Oil and drop the heat to medium. Scrape up all those delicious meaty bits that may have stuck to the pan into the Butter. Once the Butter has melted, add the Potatoes and Dried Oregano, along with a generous seasoning of Salt and Pepper. Give them a nice coat of the melted Butter and then fry for 25 – 30 minutes
The Potatoes will need to be turned every once in a while. As we’re pan frying them, the part of the Potato that’s directly exposed to the pan is going to brown up and crisp. You want an even cook all over, so turn the Potatoes accordingly as they cook
Once the Potatoes are tender on the inside and golden-brown / crispy on the outside they are done. To test if the Potatoes are completely done, just take one out of the pan and give it a taste
Finishing the Garlic Butter Steak and Potatoes
Once the Potatoes are completely cooked the dish is basically done. The final step is to add the Garlic to the dish to give it that beautiful and unique Garlic Butter flavor. Garlic burns very quickly, so you only want to add it at the very end to ensure you get the optimal aromas and flavor out of this ingredient
So, melt the remaining Butter into the pan (another 2 tbsp.) along with the diced Garlic. Once melted, return the Steak pieces to the pan and stir everything through, allowing the Steak to reheat. The dish is now done! To finish, simply remove from the heat and garnish with some finely diced Scallions and it’s ready to serve

We recommend serving this dish with a tasty Sauce
Initially when making this Garlic Butter Steak and Potatoes dish we weren’t planning on pairing it with a sauce. But, once it was cooked and we took a bite, it was obvious this dish will benefit greatly from a sauce. We ended up making a classic Sour Cream and Sweet Chili Sauce combination which turned out great to pair with the Potatoes and Steak
A bright and vibrant Sauce will pair great with this recipe. Something like this Authentic Chimichurri Sauce or even our tasty Mojo Picon Sauce which has some spicy, peppery flavors to it will pair great
